Legislative Coordinator

The Legislative Coordinator for the Fish Campaign meets with members of Congress and their staff and with executive branch officials to convey Food and Water Watch’s position, as well as coordinate with research and organizing staff to further the campaign’s legislative initiatives. The Legislative Coordinator reports to the Fish Program Director.

Food & Water Watch is a nonprofit consumer action organization headquartered in Washington, DC that runs cutting edge campaigns to help ensure clean water and safe food. We work with grassroots organizations around the world to create an economically and environmentally viable future and advocate for safe, wholesome food, produced in a humane and sustainable manner, and public rather than private control of water resources, including oceans, rivers, and groundwater. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post and other major media outlets.  

The Food & Water Watch Fish Program works to promote clean, green, safe seafood for consumers, while protecting the environment and supporting the wellbeing of coastal communities.

The Legislative Coordinator for the Fish Campaign meets with members of Congress and their staff and with executive branch officials to convey Food and Water Watch’s position, as well as coordinate with research and organizing staff to further the campaign’s legislative initiatives. The Legislative Coordinator reports to the Fish Program Director.

Specific Responsibilities:


•    Conduct face to face meetings with members and Congressional staff and executive branch officials, maintain frequent telephone communications with staff, provide written materials as requested, and prepare testimony for Congressional committees.
•    Track relevant agency activities and outreach with them, as necessary.
•    Work with the campaign staff in developing strategies and developing target lists within Congress and within the relevant agencies.
•    Track and analyze legislation through the Committee process and to the floor of Congress; analyze and comment on executive branch proposed regulations.
•    Coordinate and outreach with alliance partners on overlapping national strategies.
•    Provide quality written legislative related products, such as formal correspondence and fact sheets.
•    Work with research and organizing staff to ensure coordination with legislative goals.
•    Supervise, train and mentor legislative assistants, interns and other staff assigned to the campaign.
•    Coordinate efforts of staff in other Food & Water Watch teams affecting the issue area.
•    Other duties, as assigned.
•    Occasional domestic travel, as necessary.


Requirements

Education: College degree required. Law degree or Masters in marine or environmental policy preferred.

Knowledge: Familiarity with Capitol Hill and legislative strategy, advocacy and media relations, as well as environmental and/or consumer issues. Experience with oceans conservation, fisheries management a plus.

Work Experience: A minimum of 3–4 years of lobbying and/or advocacy of public policy issues, including some supervisory experience.

Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, good interpersonal skills. Proficiency in computer software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Capabilities: Ability to think creatively and quickly to respond to legislative developments and to take advantage of breaking news; demonstrated leadership capability; ability to work well with a wide variety of people and to coordinate diverse tasks. Able to multi-task.
