Follow our fish team in the Gulf!

Help our fish team protect the Gulf from offshore fish farming! From October 20th – 29th, Food & Water Watch’s fish team will be traveling throughout the Gulf Region, spreading the word about a flawed plan proposed by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council that would allow open ocean aquaculture in the Gulf. The Gulf Council’s plan is bad news for commercial and recreational fishermen, gulf citizens, and others who will be effected by the potentially destructive industry that could have numerous health impacts on consumers, harmful impacts on our ocean resources, and negative economic impacts on coastal communities.

Gulf Council Meeting Q & A

Commercial and recreational fishermen, environmentalists, consumer advocacy groups - together we’ve kept the Gulf Council from pushing through a bad plan for industrial fish farming in our Gulf waters. We can’t let our guard down now and we need your help. The plan still lacks the basic safeguards for fishermen, coastal communities and the environment that we have been calling for, and the Gulf Council is planning to VOTE on the plan at this meeting! But you can make a difference! The council is holding a question and answer session for the public with the entire council, and there are two more chances to go on record with our concerns.

Need help getting there?  No problem.  Call or e-mail Christina at 202-683-2495 or clizzi@fwwatch.org and we’ll help arrange transportation for you.  We’ll have car pooling from central locations in New Orleans, Biloxi, Bon Secour and Bayou la Batre up to the meeting in Mobile on Monday evening.

Here are more details:
WHEN: Monday, October 27 at 5:00 PM – Question & answer plus comment period    Wednesday, October 29 at 1:30 PM – General public comment period
WHERE:  Renaissance Riverview Hotel, 64 South Water Street, Mobile, AL 36602

Sustainable Seafood Sundays

You don’t have to be a culinary genius to celebrate safe, healthy and sustainable seafood. All you have to do is gather a bunch of friends, family or neighbors and prepare one of our delicious menus suggested by Chef Rocky!

Sunday, October 5 Menu:

Pure and Simple (with a twist)

Starter - crab cocktail - 6oz of your favorite local crab (check out the ones specifically listed on our card!), precooked and out of the shell, drizzled with lemon and sprinkled lightly with chives, topped with a dollop of cocktail sauce.
Chopped Salad - diced cucumber, shredded carrots, chopped black olives, and thinly sliced red onion make a colorful and refreshing combination. Marinade in an herb vinaigrette (mint is our favorite) and spoon atop chopped romaine lettuce, add more dressing to taste. For a real ta-da, you can top with a few small, pre-cooked, peeled shrimp - tiny Pacific or Gulf Pinks work well and a lime wedge.
Main course - Fried or grilled Pacific whiting - serve with fresh tarter sauce - just add pickled relish to mayonnaise (a good trick for some extra saucy pizzazz is a bit of Dijon mustard in the mix).
Sides - roasted potatoes, lightly coated in olive oil seasoned with salt and black pepper to taste, corn on the cob (we like to grill the corn and add fun toppings, first butter, then sprinkle with any (or all) of the following: chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, parmesan cheese - make up your own!) and a medley of zucchini and yellow squash with white or yellow onion (slice zucchini and squash, then sauté or bake with onions and butter, salt and pepper to taste).
Dessert - sliced watermelon, cookies of choice

Sunday, October 12 Menu:

Fire Up the Grill Before the Cold Sets In

Starter - Grilled U.S. Day-Boat Scallops, stuffed Avocados with Papaya Vinaigrette
Main course - Grilled Key West Pink Shrimp and Bacon* Skewers with Red Onions and Bell Peppers
Sides - Spicy Black Beans and Rice
Dessert - Grilled Pineapple and Bananas with Rum-Molasses Glaze and a scoop of Ice Cream

Sunday, October 19 Menu:

Sustainable Shells

Starter - US Farm raised oysters on the half shell with mignotte and fresh lemon wedges
Main course - US Farm raised clams with linguine, parmesan, cracked black pepper and basil
Sides - Fresh green salad with arugula, pomegranate, olive oil and crusty bread
Dessert - Poached pears with spiced caramel sauce

Voodoo Festival

Fish CostumeFind the fish at the Voodoo Festival!

If you’re going to the three-day music festival in New Orleans, look out for our fish team joined by our very own fish mascot! The fish team will be helping spread the word about the Gulf Council’s bad plan for industrial fish farming in Gulf waters – a plan that will be voted on by the council just the week after! This will be our last chance to build some pressure, and you can help by posing for a picture with the fish in our photo petition!

Call or e-mail Christina at 202-683-2495 or clizzi@fwwatch.org for more information.
