With Ambitious Renewable Energy Goal, Mayors Take the Lead
At its annual meeting, the US Conference of Mayors passed a resolution today calling for 100% clean, renewable energy by 2035 in their communities.
The following statement is from Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch:
“With little hope for real change coming from Washington, this resolution takes a remarkably bold step in the right direction to combat climate chaos. The mayors’ resolution sets an appropriately aggressive target for renewables, and it includes language that prioritizes environmental justice and a just transition for workers in the fossil fuel industries.
“It is unfortunate that the Mayors include biomass among their accepted ‘renewable’ sources. Biomass is a byproduct of dirty industries such as factory farming that have significant health and environmental impacts beyond greenhouse gas emissions.”
“In 2015, Food & Water Watch identified a goal of 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035 or sooner as a vital component of the clean energy revolution that is necessary to win the fight against climate chaos. With Trump in the White House and fossil fuel-friendly Republicans in control of Congress, these mayors are committing their communities to a clean energy future that will create good jobs and protect our planet.”
