Baltimore City Council Passes State Water Taxpayer Protection Act Unanimously

January 14, 2019 - Today, the Baltimore City Council unanimously approved a resolution offered by Councilmember Shannon Sneed requesting that the Maryland General Assembly pass the Water Taxpayer Protection Act. The Water Taxpayer Protection Act, sponsored by Sen. Mary Washington and Del. Nick Mosby, will stop Baltimore City from selling residential property and places of worship at tax sale to enforce a lien for unpaid charges for water and sewer service.
In response, the following statement was issued by Rianna Eckel, Maryland Senior Organizer at Food & Water Watch:
“We applaud Councilmember Sneed for her leadership in guiding City Council to support this important piece of state legislation and we thank the Baltimore City Council for voting in support of her resolution. For far too long, Baltimore City residents have seen their homes and places of worship lost at tax sale over incorrect or unaffordable water bills, with this resolution. We are pleased to see that the City Council is united in their support of ending this shameful practice.”
