LANSING, MI - “Today, Governor Snyder came out in defense of the controversial Enbridge pipeline, and moved to delay decommissioning and environmental protection, by offering a false solution meant to distract from a real solution.
Facing mounting public scrutiny, the Governor is using the only weapon left to defend Enbridge’s decrepit Line 5 bureaucracy. By offering an inconceivably inappropriate solution to the crisis that is Line 5, the Governor seeks to distract from the reality that this pipeline endangers drinking water for millions of people every day. Necessary measures to plan, vet, and evaluate this fictitious tunnel proect could extend for years in the future, or at least long enough for the next election cycle to end.
A move to shut down the pipeline during bad weather is an admission of risk. If Line 5 is too vulnerable to use during storms, it’s too vulnerable to be entrusted with the safety of our Great Lakes, the main source of our drinking water and the economic driver of Michigan. Line 5 must be shut down permanently to ensure that generations of Michiganders do not have to face the environmental, economic, and public health impacts of a disastrous oil spill.”
