Statement by Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch
“Food & Water Watch will actively oppose the nomination of Dow Chemical Executive Scott Hutchins to oversee science and research at the USDA. It doesn’t take a PhD to know that this move represents the interests of industrial agriculture in growing their bottom lines. Their payday will come at a cost to farmers, farmworkers, and the environment, and will result in more dangerous toxins in our food.
“Dow Chemical donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s inaugural committee, and they are certainly getting a return on their investment in Team Trump. In March 2017, the EPA reversed plans to ban the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos—a product of Dow Agroscience. Chlorpyrifos is a potent neurotoxin that exposes farmworkers, nearby communities and people who eat food sprayed with it to unacceptable risks—especially our children.
“Trump’s Department of Justice also greenlit the megamerger with DuPont, helping no one but company shareholders. This ultra-consolidation in agriculture reduces the choices farmers have over what they plant and how they grow it, meaning more GMOs, more chemicals, more industrialization—and more profits.
“Unsurprisingly, Hutchins would be the third Dow Chemical heavy hitter to join the USDA.
“Trump’s coziness with corporations that are industrializing our food, polluting our air, contaminating our water and accelerating climate change is unprecedented. The Senate must oppose the nomination of Hutchens at the USDA, a particularly egregious gift to the chemical industry that imperils our food system from field to plate.”
Food & Water Watch champions healthy food and clean water for all. We stand up to corporations that put profits before people, and advocate for a democracy that improves people’s lives and protects our environment.
