Danskammer, Astoria and Gowanus fracked gas expansion projects must be blocked

For Immediate Release
Albany, NY — In his State of the State speech today, Governor Andrew Cuomo outlined his commitment to rebuilding New York’s post-COVID economy on the backbone of green energy. Beyond building extensive new solar and wind infrastructure, the Governor committed to the replacement of existing fossil fuel plants.

“We must replace fossil fuel plants with clean power,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.” The Governor’s commitment to rapidly transitioning New York’s energy infrastructure off fossil fuels signals a promising shift in state policies for which environmental groups have long advocated.

In response, Food & Water Watch Northeast Region Director Alex Beauchamp issued the following statement:

“Governor Cuomo has been listening, and he understands the necessity of replacing New York’s fossil fuel infrastructure with clean, green energy. As Governor Cuomo said in today’s State of the State, New Yorkers support our plans with swift and bold action. This means stopping the expansion of Danskammer and buildout of the Gowanus and Astoria fossil fuel plants in their tracks. Let’s get to work – no ifs, ands or buts about it.”
