Statement by Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch
Washington, D.C. – “The Trump administration has turned into a cavalcade of compromised individuals with extensive ties to the fossil fuel industry. Like Scott Pruitt at the EPA before him, Ryan Zinke is leaving the Interior Department under intense scrutiny of both his personal financial dealings and his ethical conduct as a cabinet official. The environment is worse off today than when Pruitt or Zinke were confirmed.
“Zinke was tasked with overseeing our natural resources, but he took that responsibility to mean handing out our public lands for fossil fuel industry profits. Unfortunately, we don’t expect much better from David Bernhardt. Like Andrew Wheeler, who has been heading the EPA since Pruitt left, Bernhardt is a fossil fuel industry insider. Trump will continue to promote the interests of oil, gas and coal. The new Congress must provide oversight when it comes to the giveaway of our public health and environment to the fossil fuel industry, at a time when we must instead transition to clean energy to avert climate chaos.”
Food & Water Watch champions healthy food and clean water for all. We stand up to corporations that put profits before people, and advocate for a democracy that improves people’s lives and protects our environment.
