As someone who has been actively concerned about food and water for almost half a century, I appreciate that Food & Water Watch is bringing accurate and important information to people spreading the word about issues that only a few of us used to be aware of.

Complaint Against Food & Water Watch for Issue 2 Ad Dropped

Statement of Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter

Washington, D.C. – “On the heels of the Ohio Farm Bureau resolving its dispute with the Humane Society of the United States, yesterday the Ohioans for Livestock Care political action committee, a coalition including the Ohio Farm Bureau, withdrew its complaint to the Ohio Elections Commission that Food & Water Watch had provided false information in a campaign commercial against Issue 2 last year.

“Issue 2, which passed in Ohio, amended the state constitution to create the Livestock Care Standards Board, which provided a blank check for the livestock industry to regulate itself. Most Ohioans who voted in favor of the measure would be shocked to know that while agribusiness claimed to be protecting small farmers and consumers, the real winners are the large corporations that control meat production.

“Even though the complaint has been withdrawn, it does not make up for the costs imposed on Food & Water Watch by the agribusiness interests who tried to use their financial clout to silence any criticism of the factory farms they promote, which put public health, the environment, and animal welfare at risk.

“The message is clear: When Big Ag wants to regulate itself, it will go after anyone that gets in the way.”
