At today’s Delaware River Basin Commission meeting, the commissioners voted in favor of a motion to stay the planned in-water construction of the Gibbstown liquefied gas export terminal until a technical review can be completed. 

The vote was 3-1-1; New Jersey, New York and Delaware voted in favor of the stay, the Army Corps of Engineers opposed it, and Pennsylvania abstained.

The proposal to build a fracking export terminal has drawn intense community opposition, and thousands of residents of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware have pressured the DRBC to stop the project. 

In response, Food & Water Action South Jersey Organizer Jocelyn Sawyer released the following statement:

“Today’s commission vote was the result of grassroots pressure to keep this dangerous fracking hub out of the Delaware River, a drinking water source for millions of people. New Fortress’s outrageous and untested scheme would send high volumes of fracked gas by trains or trucks to an export terminal right on the Delaware River, threatening the health and safety of nearby communities and the river itself. Today’s vote pumps the brakes on the Gibbstown terminal, but what we really need is Governor Murphy and the DRBC to definitively and permanently reject this awful project.”
