Food & Water Watch Senior Legislative and Policy Analyst Mitch Jones squared off against International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) President and CEO Joe Doss in front of program hosts Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, Sue Herera and Tyler Mathisen.

Jack Johnson takes back the tap with Jim Walsh and volunteers in Holmdel, NJ.
We just got off the bus from our summer tour with Jack Johnson. Yeah, THAT Jack Johnson—the Rodeo Clown, himself. Food & Water Watch was recently selected to receive a generous donation from Jack Johnson’s charitable organization All at Once. We teamed up with Jack and All At Once, a social action network connecting nonprofits with people who want to become active in their local and world community, on the Jack Johnson 2010 To The Sea Tour. We were invited to set up informational tables in Johnson’s well-known Village Green, a collection of interactive booths designed to educate, inspire and connect us face-to-face with music fans, water fans, and other local and national non-profits. Last week, among government workers of the commonwealth of Virginia, the hot topic around the water cooler is most certainly the water cooler itself. Governor Bob McDonnell proudly defied one critical portion of former Governor Timothy M. Kaine’s plan to “green” Virginia by reversing Kaine’s ban on bottled water. (GULP!) One step forward, two steps back. At a time when many cities across the country are moving forward by reconsidering their relationship with bottled water, McDonnell wants to move all of Virginia backward. Virginia is a bottle-aholic. Since much of the country is experiencing a record-breaking temperatures this summer, it seems like yet another good opportunity to talk about water. While you’re sweating profusely and in desperate need of hydration, think for a moment about the water you’re drinking and how you get it. Even though we have one of the most accessible and safe water systems in the world here in the U.S., it’s falling into a state of disrepair. Many of the individual systems that carry our water are outdated. Old drinking water pipes lose 1.7 trillion gallons of treated water a year, while sewage overflows and storm runoff continue to be a problem. Remember the water main break in Boston recently? We need to turn our attention to how we can prepare our water infrastructure for the future. We need to Renew America’s Water.
