Senate Dems must not let GOP guide so-called permitting reform

Today the House passed HR 1, the Republican majority’s energy bill.

Food & Water Watch Policy Director Jim Walsh issued the following statement in response:

“While scientists around the world are warning that we need to immediately phase out fossil fuels, the Republican-controlled House is wasting time pushing a fossil fuel industry wish list that would roll back bedrock public health and environmental laws and entrench decades of fossil fuel pollution.

“HR 1 will not become law, but the real danger is that Senator Schumer will use this as cover to justify passing something similar to the dirty pipeline deal that he made with Senator Manchin last year. The Senate rejected that dirty deal last year after hundreds of organizations and dozens of lawmakers spoke out against the ploy to dress up fossil fuel giveaways as so-called ‘permitting reform’. It is time for Senator Schumer to make it clear that he will not negotiate any deals that undermine core public health laws for the sake of fossil fuel industry profits.”
