Ruling sends REAE project back to regulators
Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit vacated federal approvals for a fossil fuel expansion project in New Jersey.
In 2023, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued a certificate of public convenience and necessity to the Williams-Transco company for the Regional Energy Access Expansion (REAE) project, which includes plans to expand an existing compressor station in Somerset County and build a new compressor facility in Gloucester County.
In response, Food & Water Watch New Jersey State Director Matt Smith released the following statement:
“This is an incredible victory for the people of New Jersey who organized to stop this dirty, dangerous and unnecessary fracked gas pipeline project. For years, the fossil fuel industry has been able to build more pipelines that are unnecessary, costly, and polluting to our climate and communities. To transition away from fossil fuels, we need to stop building new polluting infrastructure that locks us into decades more dirty energy dependence. This decision can help guide us in the right direction. Amidst a rapidly escalating climate crisis, Governor Murphy must use this moment to enact a moratorium on all new fossil fuel projects in New Jersey, including the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission’s plans to build another dirty gas power plant in Newark’s Ironbound community.”
