Statement of Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food & Water Watch
In recent hours, the Trump administration has announced shocking and unprecedented actions that will directly and almost immediately impact public health and safety for a wide swath of the American population. These actions include, among others:
- A comprehensive pause in funding to scores of programs across the scope of government, including to food security programs, fundamental food safety inspections, and regular funding for water infrastructure systems.
- Cancellation of an existing EPA rule to protect communities from exposure to toxic per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as ‘forever chemicals.’
At the same time, Republicans in Congress are working to cancel a key rule on lead contamination in water that would replace all lead water pipes in the country in a decade, protecting tens of millions.
In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:
“Trump’s abhorrent disregard for basic food and water safety will kill people – plain and simple. On the campaign trail, Trump spoke often of ‘beautiful, clean air and water’ and safe, affordable food for all. We are sadly not surprised to clearly see that his priorities couldn’t be more misaligned with those hollow, meaningless platitudes. Trump cares about one thing and one thing only: enriching himself and his billionaire oligarch cronies at the expense of everyday Americans – including his own supporters. We will fight Trump’s malicious agenda at every turn.”
