GOP House Members Will be Held Accountable for Unconscionable Cuts to Food, Nutrition Programs

Washington – Tonight the U.S. House of Representatives voted to advance a federal budget resolution that paves the way for massive, unprecedented cuts to fundamental food, clean water and public health programs that protect the wellbeing of millions of Americans  – all to accommodate $4.5 trillion in tax cuts weighted heavily towards corporations and the country’s wealthiest individuals. The resolution passed almost entirely on a party-line vote, with all Democrats opposed.

Among its threats, the Republican budget resolution directs major cuts to essential programs, including:

  • $230 billion from programs under the Agricultural Committee, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that provides food assistance to more than 40 million low-income people annually;
  • $330 billion from the Education and Workforce Committee, which oversees school lunches and more;
  • $880 billion from the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees healthcare, environmental and water programs.

In response, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter issued the following statement:

“The budget framework passed by House Republicans is cruel and dangerous. With its unprecedented and unconscionable cuts to fundamental food, water and health programs, this budget represents a clear and present threat to virtually everyone. Make no mistake: If enacted, this plan will cost everyday Americans their lives. Each of the House Republicans that voted for this egregious attack on public health will be held accountable by their constituents in the weeks, months and years to come.”
