General Assembly and Governor walk back goals of embracing clean, renewable energy goals, finalized in last day of session

Yesterday, the legislative session in Annapolis wrapped up by passing the Next Generation Energy Act (NGEA), now on its way to Governor Wes Moore’s desk to be signed into law. The bill looks to incentivize the buildout of nuclear reactors and methane gas plants, as a response to Maryland’s energy concerns.

Under the guidelines set out by the NGEA, the Moore administration could begin the process of green lighting energy projects in October 2025.

Jorge Aguilar, Southern Regional Director with Food & Water Watch, released this statement:

“The Next Generation Energy Act’s passage is a reflection of the legislators’ failure to address some of the state’s most pressing energy and climate concerns. State leaders are fully walking back promises of enacting a 100 percent clean energy program. The dramatic shift towards incentivizing methane gas plants and nuclear reactors is a distraction and divestment from the renewable energy programs that would allow Maryland to safely generate in-state energy while lowering utility ratepayers’ bills. The bill also lays the groundwork for  the use of greenwashing scams like hydrogen and carbon capture that are being touted by the fossil fuel industry as a means of getting more taxpayer subsidies.

“Food & Water Watch is calling on Gov. Moore to reject dirty energy proposals and act swiftly to implement truly clean, renewable energy projects that will reliably serve Marylanders’ needs in the short and long term. For years, Moore has spoken of his commitment to clean energy goals, but his administration has done little to match his climate rhetoric. It’s time he acts to address the climate emergency and truly ensure affordable energy.”
