To Contain COVID-19 Crisis, Wolf Must Immediately Shut Down Shell Cracker Plant Construction

For Immediate Release

Due to the unsafe and unsanitary conditions at the Shell cracker plant in Beaver County, Governor Wolf must immediately shut down the facility to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

As documented by KDKA reporter Andy Sheehan, workers have reported a range of safety hazards, from crowded buses to a lack of hand sanitizer in portable bathrooms.

In response, Food & Water Action Pennsylvania Organizing Manager Megan McDonough released the following statement:

"If Governor Wolf wants to protect Shell workers, their families and the broader community, he must immediately halt construction on the Beaver County cracker plant. The company’s assurances that it will conduct more thorough cleaning practices are totally insufficient. While Governor Wolf has pushed ‘non-essential’ businesses to close for two weeks, he should take more proactive steps to keep Pennsylvanians safe during this public health crisis."
