Obama Does Right by Standing Rock Sioux, but Fight Against Dakota Access Pipeline Continues
Washington, D.C. - "We are relieved that the Obama administration is showing the Standing Rock Sioux the dignity and respect they deserve by halting further construction of the Dakota Access pipeline on or near their sacred lands and water sources. This important development is a testament to the peaceful yet determined resistance the Sioux and their fellow water protectors maintained in the face of belligerent corporate greed and a militarized, sometimes violent police force amassed against them.
"But the fight against the Dakota Access pipeline isn't over. It won't be until this hazardous, antiquated oil conduit is canceled for good. This pipeline and many other proposals like it would serve only to deepen our society's dependence on polluting fossil fuels, and place in peril the front-line communities that must face the constant threat of leaks, spills, explosions and water contamination from oil and gas infrastructure every day."
