To Show Real Climate Leadership, Murphy Must Enact Fossil Fuel Moratorium

Food & Water Watch Senior Organizer Matt Smith released the following statement in reaction to Governor Phil Murphy’s state of the state address:

“From the Pinelands to the Meadowlands, fossil fuel corporations are seeking to build pipelines, compressor stations and power plants that will pollute our air, water, and climate. Getting New Jersey to rejoin a regional pollution trading system is not ‘leading the nation in fighting climate change.’ Governor Murphy must institute a full and complete moratorium on any and all dirty energy projects before state regulators.

“Governor Murphy wants to have it both ways on climate and clean energy: He has announced big goals and deadlines to be met in the future, while failing to take action on the immediate decisions under his control. There are a dozen major fossil fuel infrastructure expansion projects planned for New Jersey, all of which would deepen our state’s dependence on the dirty fuels that are cooking the planet. If he wants to be a climate leader, the governor should declare a moratorium on all such projects.”
